Top Travel Tips from My Grandmother Phoebe

Grandmother Phoebe & Me at 14 yrs. old
Sitting on the plane this week I find myself thinking about my Grandmother Phoebe Hocken and the impact she had on me.

My Grandfather died when he crashed his plane; my dad, uncle and aunt were still very young. Grandma took a job managing the books for Del Smith, a local pilot with a crop-dusting service. His business grew and eventually became Evergreen Helicopters of McMinnville, OR, where she worked and provided for her family. She was at Del’s side until her retirement, and was referred to as “The First Lady of Evergreen” at her funeral. All I wanted when I was young was to be like her – an independent, professional businesswoman with quick wit, taylored suits and Italian shoes who travelled around the world meeting interesting people.

As I look around on the plane I smile thinking about the Top Travel Tips she taught me once when flying me home in a Cessna from a weekend we spent together.

• “Always request the window. You won’t have to get up, or get bumped by those coming down the aisle.”
• “If you’re not upgrading to First Class, sit on the wing. You’ll feel less turbulence.”
• “Have a book in your purse, start reading the moment you’re seated to avoid unwanted dialog.”
• “Never take off your shoes. Your feet will swell and you won’t get them back on. Besides, it’s rude.”
• “Always carry and drink water to stay hydrated.”
• “Keep breath-freshening gum in your handbag. It helps alleviate pressure in your ears, and you can share with the occupant of the seat next to you if they need it.”
• “A day in the forced air of a plane can dry out your skin like two weeks in Saudi Arabia. Moisturize before you fly and within three hours after you land.”
• “Bring toiletries and one suit in your carry-on in case the airline loses you luggage.”

As I sit in my window seat on the wing, I take a drink of water, pop a piece of gum in my mouth and open my book. My Italian shoes are on my feet, and my suit neatly folded in my bag along with plenty of moisturizer. On my right hand is Grandma’s antique onyx and diamond ring; it was on her finger since I can remember first putting my hand in hers. How much I loved her, how much I have become like her.

I wonder if Grandma knew how closely I was listening that day on our flight together, if she foresaw how much her example would impact even the smallest behaviors in my life. We should be constantly mindful of the power of influence we have, people are always watching and learning – especially the children.

Read of the Month - A Leader's Legacy by Kouzes & Posner

“What you do know is that you can make a difference. You can leave this world better than you found it…”
-A Leader’s Legacy

Oftentimes we hear the word “Leader” and images of famous role models like politicians come to mind: politicians like Winston Churchill, thinkers – Albert Einstein, writers – Charles Dickens, humanitarians – Mother Theresa, etc.
We may ponder the old cliché – “Are Leaders born, or taught?” and if answering “born” disqualify ourselves personally thinking “I was certainly not born a Leader” depending on our personal perception of self. And yet this can be a cop out, an opportunity to shirk responsibility to take active steps and apply disciplines to maximize our positive leadership influence in our homes, workplace, and community. DuVita’s “Read of the Month” addresses this in depth.

Personal development is about growth, maximizing strengths and minimizing weakness, and is a lifelong journey all members of the human race should embrace and strive to display excellence. Throughout the journey we can indeed “become” better leaders, inspiring positive change in the lives of those who look to us for guidance.

“A Leader’s Legacy” is a work filled with wisdom and challenge, promoting reflection and introspection. Divided into four sections – Significance, Relationships, Aspirations, and Courage, it is a book that captures the essence of DuVita – especially in the area of leaving a legacy summarized when the authors state “You just never know whose life you might touch. You just never know what change you might initiate and what impact you might have. You just never know when that critical moment might come. What you do know is that you can make a difference. You can leave this world better than you found it”. (Afterword pp. 181)

I invite you to join us this month in reading (or re-reading) this great book, encourage your Leader’s to do the same, and allow your team to share what it means to them on your Team calls. Our organization will truly benefit from the legacy we will build together as we continue our mission to create “a Better Life, a Better World”.

The Matthew Wright Gala fundraiser is July 10, 2010, in San Antonio, Texas

Tomorrow is a very special day in the life of a dear friend of the family.  Jay Wright (center) was the Best Man in Mike and my wedding back in 1982 in my hometown of Eugene, OR.  His beautiful children are about the same age as ours.
Last June what started out as a fun-filled float trip ended with Jay's only son Matthew (right) being attacked by another young man and Matthew, then a 22-year old college quarterback, sustained a serious brain stem injury that has left him paralyzed and unable to care for himself.
When I visited Matt a few months ago in Austin, Texas at the neuro Rehab Hospital I could see the same sparkle in his eyes I saw when he was an adorable young boy.  But now he cannot speak, and my heart is broken for both him, robbed of his future, and his family who now have spent the last year at his side who find themselves faced with the insurance company informing them Matthew will be moved from the rehab center to a nursing home facility.
Tomorrow night is the Matthew Wright Gala (http://www.matthewwrightgala.com/) at the historic Menger Hotel Ballroom in San Antonio.  Hundreds of people will be attending the fund raiser and participating in a silent auction including generous packages donationed from friends of Matthew's stepfather Texas Longhorn/Eagle/and coach Bill Bradley and Matthew's mom Susan.  In addition, Matt's uncle Michael Wright who is the EVP, Head of Programming, TBS, TNT and Turner Classic Movies (TCM) has acquired packages from high profile Hollywood personalities like Stephen Spielberg.
Thank you to all who donate, support, and pray for this beautiful young man.  This is a sobering reminder to take nothing for granted, to live each day to the fullest, and to walk in the spirit of thanksgiving - each and every day. To Matthew, Jay, and Susan, we love you and keep you in our thoughts and prayers.

DuVita Regional Event in Texas rich in Talent

After an intensive trip on the road to TN, AZ, and TX last week I am home today reflecting on the talent and potential of the amazing people I spent time with.  Thanks to everyone who supported the events, and to the crew in TX who put on DuVita's first "Regional," WELL DONE!  Michelle Lee Outlaw, and Ronnie & Lisa Coufal were outstanding hosts - compelling and heartfelt as they shared what DuVita is doing in their lives and for those on their teams.

I was really impacted by a presentation given by Sarah Webb (Ronnie & Lisa's daughter).  This Generation Y-er was an incredible representation of  a new wave of Relationship Marketers, and I believe she will prove to be one of our brightest rising stars at DuVita.

I was reminded of articles and talks I've heard recently about this generation, and feel our industry is perfectly suited for them.  An article I read this week by Evrim Kuram revealed insights into why they will be so successful at DuVita:

"This generation (Generation Y born 1980-2000) symbolizes the transition from materialism to post-materialism in the world. In other words, we are talking about a generation who emphasize time rather than money, quality rather than quantity and experience rather than possession. They are outspoken, skeptical, interested in technology, and multitaskers. They emphasize the “real,” so one cannot reach them with imaginary products, imaginary projects, or with imaginary heroes. Functionality, fast service, high quality and reasonable price are the characteristics that attract a Y-er’s interest. Another important factor in their lives is peers’ approval.
If feelings will be present in the corporate world, if business life will be more meaningful, and at the end, if this planet will be a more sensitive one, we will do this with the Generation Y."  Sounds like our kind of people, what do you think?

Happy Father's Day - What Top Ten Men in My Life Taught Me

There is no greater gift bestowed upon us than our children.  On a day we celebrate the love and sacrifices of our Father's, I am mindful that not everyone has a relationship with theirs that constitutes fond memories or includes positive influence.  Therefore I'm especially thankful for mine.  Although not perfect, and we certainly had our ups and downs, I am aware that Dad didn't tell me how to live, but showed me.  And I am fortunate enough to have married a man who also leads by example as well.

In thinking about the men in my life who have influenced me; it goes well beyond my dad or husband, and demonstrates the need for men to approach leadership responsibly, knowing that the lives they touch far exceeds their immediate families.  So I want to recognize 10 Men in my life by sharing one thing they taught me that has influenced who I am.

#1 Father - John:  Have integrity, be true to yourself

#2 Brother - Johnny:  Be sensitive to human frailty, live and love for today

#3 Lord Jesus:  All people are created equal in the sight of God

#4 Husband - Mike:  The true meaning of love is sacrifice

#5 Teacher - Dr. Walter:  Be prepared to provide answers for what you believe

#6 Pastor - Rick:  I am responsible to feed myself

#7 Son - Tyler:  God answers persistent prayer

#8 Business Partner - Jordan:  With belief all things are possible

#9 Mentor - RichRaz:  The only thing that can hold me back is me

#10 YOU - I am always looking to learn something from everyone, what will that be from you?

Happy Father's Day!

DuVita Leadership Dinner with Amber and Nelson @ Amber McAdam's Home

What a night!  I am overwhelmed with joy and excitement about what the future holds for this great company of DuVita after spending the evening with over 30 of the top Field and Corporate leadership.  Words cannot express my deep respect and admiration for the quality individuals I met tonight, many for the first time.

Amber & Nelson were absolutely stellar hosts; making myself, my husband Mike, and all of the guests feel completely at home, appreciated, and pampered; from the parking attendants to the servers, the delightful menu selections and fresh floral arrangements at every table.  The time flew as we had the opportunity to connect, share ideas, and get to know each other during the informal meet and greet hour, and there was no shortage of laughter and dialog at the dining tables dotting the outdoor patio adjoining the grand sitting room.  How fun it was to watch the fireflies dancing around the estate - something we don't see in the Pacific Nortwest!

Tomorrow in the morning we will connect at a breakfast meeting for corporate presentations and open forum discussions regarding DuVita's state of the business and strategy for the second half of 2010.  I am confident with the talent pool assembled we have nothing but paramount success in store.  Thank you to all of the Associates who made the trip to Tennessee, and thank you Amber & Nelson for your vision, your heart, and your belief.  Onward & Upward!

Tried and True Decision Making Process

I am looking to the week ahead with great anticipation as Mike and I prepare to come out to Tennessee to meet new business associates and friends.

So much has happened in a short period of time to lead up to this new chapter in our lives. It has served us well throughout our 25+ years of marriage to apply a few fundamentals of decision making that have rarely served us wrong, and I share them to illustrate why I am confident DuVita is the right choice for us.

1) Evaluating Circumstances: In the Sound of Music when Maria says; “when God closes a door He opens a window” it might sound cliche, but when we hit walls in life and cease to feel we are in the right place, it is time to look for the open window to confirm our intuition.

2) Consult Respected Mentors: Throughout life we meet many people, and every so often we come into contact with people we can trust, whose counsel proves honorable and wise. Cultivating these precious relationships is key - not only for personal development, but as these resources (mentors and accountability partners) are priceless.

3) Honor Values: Each of us has standards by which we live, priorities we set, character we wish to exemplify. Our core value system should be established with lines drawn that aren’t be crossed when making choices, or we can be put into situations where we aren't true to ourselves, nor will we find contentment and fulfill our potential.

4) Inner Peace: This is the goal, to make decisions with no regrets, ones that when we make them give us a feeling of rest; knowledge that we have done the right thing. It is the golden ring of the decision making process!

In making the decision to start this new adventure, we have followed our personal process. The circumstances were laid out so clearly, a door closed from my perception, a window opened wide. People I respect both personally and professionally confirmed the open window was a great fit for me, and an intelligent opportunity. The mission, heart and values of our new partners align with those of my family’s. And lastly, the coveted peace and inner confidence of a right decision is within me. I am eager to begin this journey, to be a part of something bigger than myself, to find significance and joy in my work so that “I will never work another day…”

DSA Centennial Gala - Closing Night

What an unbelievable final day and the DSA event, I will never forget the learnings, the inspiration, and the stories I have heard.  Today marked the recognition and awards for great companies that have gone before us, and new achievers and partnerships whose accomplishments are nothing short of incredible.  Special congratulations to one of DuVita's strategic partners Grimes & Reese who were awarded "DSA's Annual Partnership Award" for excellence and contributions to companies in the Direct Sales channel.  In spending time connecting with them over the past couple of days, it is easy to understand why this law firm was chosen as best in show.

Tonight the DSA applauded the contributions of it's members for charitable contributions to causes such as women's issues, cancer research, children's hunger, the disabled, the poor and others.  The tens of millions of dollars donated by the direct selling companies clearly demonstrates that we are a family of people with heart and compassion, who seek to have purpose and meaning in all we do.  After a very moving video reflecting the generosity of our family of companies, singer Sandi Patty closed the night with "You'll Never Walk Alone"; no dry eyes in the room of 1400 people - the largest attendance ever at a DSA event in their history.  Wow.

Day Two Connecting People, Products & Opportunity @ the DSA Conference

Tonight was a fantastic celebration of the 100 Years of the DSA with a theme party "Celebration of a Century" where people picked their favorite decade and dressed up.  The boys from Cutco celebrated the Blues Brothers with flavor! Together Executives from different companies joined on the dance floor for a collection of music that ranged from the 60's to the present, Neil Diamond to the Black Eyed Peas!

What has been so incredible is the feeling of community among all of the companies, some direct competitors in the marketplace, side-by-side sharing the common bond we have of lifting the human condition through the products we offer, the opportunity we provide, and the cultures we create.  We saw our industry in the light of history today, door to door sales of books that led to perfume, that became Avon, women persuing their dreams on their own terms before they had the right to vote, evolving into a force of 15 million men and women doing well by doing good.

During the Social Media presentation we learned that of the tens of thousands of fans that visit our sites, by far the largest amount of click-throughs occur where there are success stories about real people experiencing real results.  Guess it goes to prove the old saying "Facts tell, stories sell".  Our stories are reflections of the human spirit, together we celebrate.

Opening Night at the DSA's 2010 Annual Meeting & 100th Anniversary Celebration

What an incredible industry we are members of.  At a private reception tonight we were addressed by President Neil Offen and members of the Board of Directors talking about the work being done to preserve the integrity and power of independent contractors everywhere.  The millions of lives who have been touched by the work of this great organization may never realize what goes on behind the scenes, but they are benefactors nonetheless - we all are.
I remember when I first read "The New Professionals" a book from the 90's that established additional credibility for the profession of Network Marketing.  It gave me great pride in being an independent associate myself while raising our young family, and the fact that Princess House, Inc. was a proud member of the DSA at that time added to my understanding that direct selling is indeed a noble and credible profession.  Here I am, 20 years later, still filled with the same sense of respect and pride in our great industry.  One that gives people the ability to set their own agendas and priorities, and to be rewarded without limit for efforts they are willing to devote to building a better quality of life for themselves and their families.
I wish every Associate could be here to see this, I know it would do nothing but build belief in this industry and in the work that you do every day!  So I will soak it in and bring it back...

"Learn as if you were to live forever; live as if you were to die tomorrow"

One of the truly greatest motivators and coaches of our time passed away on Friday night, and we send him on with warm remembrances.  Coach John Wooden, former UCLA basketball coach, was known for being selfless and giving, always composed and in control - even under the most stressful of circumstances.  Even though this simple, yet complex man, retired before I got to high school, I have heard his name, his quotes, and his praises sung for decades.  One of my favorites - "Don't give up on your dreams, or your dreams will give up on you" contains words I have repeated many times.

I have such a great admiration for coaches, after all it is how we should see ourselves whether it is our vocation or not.  Parents, friends, mentors, leaders at every level have a responsibility to look for the best in others, and encourage them to achieve it.  If each of us approached our days with a coaches mentality, with the people who look to us for guidance as being our players, forgetting about ourselves as individuals and having a "team" outlook, would the world be better?  I think so.

Thank you, Coach Wooden, for your excellence and example.  A life well lived indeed.
